Our herbal throat spray contains Kawakawa, Marshmallow, & Pelargonium with a dash of Spearmint and some Bach flowers for good measure.
Kawakawa is healing, anti-microbial, and has a peppery taste. It's long been used in New Zealand Maori herbal medicine.
Marshmallow is emollient and is soothing for inflamed tissues. It helps to soothe sore throats. Interestingly, Marshmallow root is active against periodontal bacteria. (C. Fisher, Materia Medica, pg 173.)
Pelargonium has been shown have antimicrobial action against gram negative and gram positive microbes such as streptococcus & E. coli. Some significant microbes is sword fights with include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, & Moraxella catarrhalis. (Mativandlela, Lall, & Meyer, South African Journal of Botany, May 2006, pg. 232.) Great, just great. What are they in normal language? Well, one of them has pneumonia in the name, which is a bit of a clue. The other has influenza in its name. The catarrhalis one is found in the nasal passages and throats of people who are prone to repeated ear infections. No! Do not spray this in your nose or your kid's nose! It means that if the microbe is in the throat, kapow, it's going to have a hard time.
Spearmint essential oil is included for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal action. The constituents
1,8-cineole & limonene are to blame for all of that. While the amount of Spearmint is not huge (0.01% dilution,) it is best to avoid in early pregnancy or if you are prone to miscarriage. It is an emmenagogue--fancy words for uterine contractions.
Bach flowers are included for cleansing,
to stop the worry, and to help with stress.
All in all it's pretty darn cool.
